Foursquare client: 4squick. I was very happy to see my favorite N8 Foursquare client 4squick in the Nokia Store for the N9. Being a Qt app, 4squick is cross-platform and runs fluidly on the N9. With 4squick, I can check-in to locations, see where friends are, responds to requests and even upload photos along with my check-ins.
Podcast client: gPodder. I’m a huge podcast fan and like a typical American, I have plenty of time during my commute to listen to them. gPodder handles my podcasts, including subscribing, automatic downloads and upkeep of my nine or so favorite podcasts. gPodder supports YouTube and SoundCloud subscriptions, as well
Music while on the go: Spotify. Spotify, as I wrote last week, has a very capable app for the Nokia N9, with this application, I can easily download playlists for offline playback, view and add to my music inbox and consume all the music I want, because I have a premium subscription. AMericans who have hopped on the Spotify bandwagon will love the N9 app.
DropBox access: DropN9. DropBox is my cloud-based storage locker. I keep so many files in DropBox and it’s a great way to exchange images, music and videos with your mobile without having to use a USB cable or Bluetooth exchange. Check outDropN9 – a fully featured DropBox client for our MeeGo phone.
Google Reader: NewsFlow. I’m an avid Google Reader user as RSS is my main way to keep up on the mobile universe. Mobile clients for Google Reader are hard to come by, so we’re lucky to have NewsFlow as a good Qt based option for news reading.
Enrich your life: TED. TED videos are updated daily and every one brings a unique perspective or challenging viewpoint. TEDhasn’t been forgoten about on the N9 and the TED application lists and gives useful summaries of each video. Then, playing the full video is a matter of a click.
Find your car: Parking. When I go to my local mall, sometimes I lose track of my car. My wife bears with me and is a good sport, but it is annoying to forget where your car is. Parking serves three amazing uses: geo-tagging where your car is, finding your car, and a timer to help track how long you left on your meter.
For the health nuts: Sports Tracker. Sports Tracker is a legacy application that I’ve been using since my N82 days. this application lets you track and manage your workouts, whether it’s biking, walking, skiing or some other action-packed sport. For me, I track my cycling trips and compare my times from outing to outing.
Google Voice usage: qgvdial. While qgvdial has the worst name of any application on this list, this handy little utility will be a boon to any Google Voice user who is utilizing an N9 as their main phone. With qgvdial, you can dial out and SMS from your Google Voice number, check your Google Voice voicemails and SMS messages, and even view your Google Voice contacts, with avatar images.

Nokia’s Operation Rolling Thunder for USA, very large presence in CES

T-Mobile and Nokia’s today Lumia 710 announcement is not the Nokia’s second coming to U.S. It is a mid end Nokia Windows Phone, from a brand that’s known from it’s lower end phones in North America. What Nokia needs in U.S is a high end phone to excite the market again. Nokia is to announce devices across a range of price points and if this portfolios internal name is anything to come by, Operation Rolling Thunder, it’s to be awesome.

Chris Weber, Nokia’s Head of Markets in North America also mentions that Lumia 710 (That was announced today for T-Mobile U.S.) is meant most of all for those who have avoided smartphones so far.

We will be launching a portfolio of devices in the U.S. across a range of price points, user experience and operators

Weber gives us some of the first hyping material for CES, that’s just under month a away.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas starting Jan. 10, we’ll have a very large presence and it’ll be clear that Nokia is back in a quite strong way in the U.S. – Chris Weber

Nokia will have it’s own big booth in CES and is the main sponsor of the hall. Lumia 900 announced, more services, like own Video Call app and much more?

Nokia and T-Mobile where to have event today, most of us expected to see Lumia 710 to be announced, and that’s exactly what we got. Lumia 710 on T-Mobile will cost you $49 on two-year contract and will be exclusive to T-Mobile in USA, where it’s capable to roam on HSPA+ 14.4Mbps speeds. Availability in January 11th.

Lumia 710 will come pre-installed with apps like Drive, MS Office, ESPN, T-Mobile TV and Netflix. I believe Nokia Mix Radio is not available in U.S yet, so it’s to be seen if Nokia can work it out by that time to be included on Nokia Music app.

Nokia Lumia 800 Dark Knight Rises Limited Edition (Video)

Ok, usually many of the special edition movie licensed phones can be quite lame, be it Nokia or anybody else. Maybe it’s me being huge fanboy for anything Christopher Nolan touches or something, but i would pay some extra cash for this Lumia 800 Dark Knight Rises Limited Edition. The special edition comes with Batman symbol laser carved on that unibody polycarbonate shell and special high end box.

The bad part is limited edition, and when they say that, they really mean it. Only 40 will be made and they will be available on the Batman Dark Knight Rises premier day, for price that’s not yet closed.

If you remember Nokia also introduced it’s first mass market touch screen phone, 5800 on Batman The Dark Knight. Something that was way cool, though Nokia should have advertised it more. Maybe we will see something similar from the new batman movie?

Sports Tracker is now available for Lumia 800 and 710

Where ever Nokia goes, Sports Tracker follows. Sports Tracker is now ready to be downloaded for your Lumia 800 and 710 for free in Marketplace. It is a bit unclear does Nokia have some kind exclusive access for the Sports Tracker at first on Windows Phone as Sports Tracker itself hasn’t been promoting it’s Windows Phone release, but Nokia Conversation has been promoting it being available for Nokia’s Lumia 800 and 710.

Sports tracker has quite of unique relationship with Nokia as it’s actually Nokia’s internal project from back in 2004. When it came available via Nokia Beta Labs in 2007, it was instant hit with millions of users. The creators of the app (Ykä Huhtala, Antti Sorvari and Jussi Kaasinen) took over the project as a spin-off from Nokia in 2009 spreading the app to other platforms as well. So some kind of exclusive treatment is possible, N9 also received Sports Tracker last month.

Clever Lumia 800 ad by Nokia (Video)

This is again one more eye catching ads for Lumia 800 in Germany, one of the European countries to get the phone on it’s launch. In all it’s simplicity there where Lumia 800's put in to a thick block of ice that you where free to brake and keep the phone. Getting people out of their comfort zone when trying to brake that block of ice and gathering peoples attention.

Rumor: Lumia 900 leaked picture is real

That’s one quite sexy looking phone, isn’t it? Same source that confirmed the specifications i posted on the last rumor post (that many blog seem to be now quoting) has just confirmed that this is indeed the high end phone that is pushed by Nokia to be announced at CES 2012 and carried by At&t. According to him, Lumia 900 will come at least in black, but he does not have information about other colors. This press picture, or render for internal use still doesn’t prove that this color will ever appear. Good example is the leaked picture E7 almost year before it’s release that never never came in that green color.

Just like said on the last post, Lumia 900 will feature similar unibody design as N9/800 and have the same button placement as Lumia 800. it’s a bit unclear is the back as curvy as N9/800, you after all have 7 to 12mm difference on thickness from the edge to the middle. Front glass certainly seems like it’s curved, but probably more discrete because of the size of the screen. Top should feature SIM tray, 3.5mm jack, Micro-USB. Still to be seen will those phone indeed ship with Nokia’s own video call and some kind of image modification application.

Ovi Contacts Website is discontinued

Nokia announced today that it’s going to discontinue one more OVI service, or more accurately you are still able to sync and back up your data, but the web access to your contacts on ovi.com will no longer be available. You will still have access to Ovi Contacts website till January 24, 2012.

Here’s some instructions if you are still in a need for this kind of web-based contacts service.

CD review: SPELLBINDER (1,200 edition) soundtrack

Though Basil Poledouris was better known in the 1980’s for the uber-heroic orchestral damage of such scores as CONAN, RED DAWN and ROBOCOP, some of the late composer’s most creative scores were being done for synths, from the wildly percussive car chases of NO MAN’S LAND to the eerie sci-fi western stylings of the HARLEY DAVIDSON AND THE MARLBORO MAN.

If there’s one electro-centric score of Poledouris’ that truly held hypnotically evil sway, then it would be 1987’s SPELLBINDER. This little-seen, but very effective chiller cast TOP GUN’s Rick Rossovich as the hunk who falls bad for uncanny hottie Kelly Preston. But then, what red-blooded straight guy wouldn’t, even when confronted with a witch coven conspiracy that’s hot on her tail?

It’s this pull of dangerous, intoxicating sensuality that fills Poledouris’ score, one whose chiming theme, gurgling sound design and chest-piercing melodic sustains are part and parcel of the ’80’s classic wave of keyboard-enhanced genre scores, one that included the likes of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and DREAMSCAPE. For Poledouris, it’s a unique opportunity to throw himself into the kind of haunting weirdness that betrays very little of his telltale knack for muscular themes.

SPELLBINDER does its titular trick, with waves of uncanny atmospheres and dangerous pulsing, with all musical roads leading to a memorably nihilistic climax that once again proves not to let looks fool you, even when a composer’s bewitching aura makes a supernatural femme fatale impossible to resist.

TV Review: DEXTER – Season 6 – “Smokey and the Bandit”

In the teen years, when other kids were worshipping athletes and rock stars, Dexter idolized – who else? – serial killers. In the DEXTER episode “Smokey and the Bandit,” we learn that one of Dexter’s persons of interest was the Tooth Fairy, a never-caught prolific murderer whose signature was stealing a tooth from each of his female victims.

When a young woman’s body is found with part of her tooth broken off, Dexter wonders if the Tooth Fairy has resumed his activities in the Miami area. Dexter does his usual detection and narrows his search down to Walter Kenney (Ronny Cox), an extremely grouchy senior citizen living in a retirement community. Dexter befriends Walter as much as he can – it’s hard to have a cordial relationship with a curmudgeon like Walter – and winds up listening to a litany of complaints about old age and how Walter’s son totally ignores him. Dexter wonders if he’s got the right guy, but then discovers a box full of individual teeth, much like Dexter’s own box of blood slides, in Walter’s storage unit.

When Walter calls Dexter, saying he’s become lost and got off at the wrong bus stop, Dexter picks him up and actually starts to feel sorry for him – until Walter pulls a gun on Dexter. Walter has “Goggled” Dexter and knows he’s with Miami Metro Homicide. Walter assumes this is why Dexter has tracked him down. Dexter manages to turn the tables on Walter – he’s prepared the kill room in Walter’s retirement home apartment.

Walter says he wants it known he’s the Tooth Fairy – this will finally make his son pay attention. Dexter is so horrified by the idea that his little son Harrison may someday know about Dexter’s serial killing that Dexter actually departs from ritual with Walter. Instead of stabbing him, he uses a pillow to suffocate Walter, making it appear that the elderly man simply died in his sleep. At home, as Dexter prepares to put Walter’s blood slide away, Dexter fumbles with the box and the slides hit the floor, going everywhere. Now Dexter has no idea which slide belongs to which victim. He is deeply shaken.

In other developments, Quinn (Desmond Harrington) is furious with Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) for not marrying him, as he wrongly assumes this is connected to her promotion to lieutenant. Batista (David Zayas) genuinely has Deb’s back and warns her against being bullied by now-Captain LaGuerta (Lauren Velez). LaGuerta assumes that Deb will accept LaGuerta’s choice for a new homicide detective (to replace Deb in the field); Deb bucks LaGuerta and picks an outsider from Chicago.

Masuka’s (C.S. Lee) new lab assistant Ryan (Brea Grant) turns down a date with Quinn in favor of one with Masuka, which seems like a good thing. When Masuka shows Ryan some evidence from the Ice Truck Killer case (from first season), Ryan swipes a key piece, which seems much less like a good thing.

Meanwhile, the religious serial killers (Edward James Olmos and Colin Hanks) have a new victim. After forcing him to repent his sins by terrorizing and torturing him, the victim is killed. The corpse is set on the back of one of four horses and sent out into the streets of Miami as a representation of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

What makes “Smokey and the Bandit” such a good episode is that Manny Coto’s script finds a new way of challenging Dexter’s view of his own identity. Until now, the box of slides has been so sacrosanct that neither Dexter nor the audience has ever questioned it. With the slides out of order, the box loses its meaning. What does this say about the killings Dexter has committed? Do they now also have a different meaning, and if so, what does this say about Dexter? He’s left grappling with all this as the episode ends and watching him come to some conclusions, whatever they are, should be fascinating.

Further, Dexter’s interactions with Walter force Dexter to think about what may happen if he outlives the ability to act on his urges, and how he’d feel if Harrison learned about Dexter’s secret activities. This not only provides plenty of new legitimate issues, but it’s fun getting there, with Cox relishing Walter’s loudly misanthropic nature and playing beautifully off Hall’s determined calm.

The police department scenes give us a strong rooting interest. It’s great to see Deb and Batista having each other’s backs again. While it was good to see added dimension to LaGuerta, it seems like a relief to us and to the writers to let her dominant political animal side return to the fore.

There’s also an interesting little riff with Brother Sam (Mos) gently trying to get Dexter to come to a barbeque/religious meeting on Sunday. Dexter is both attracted and repelled not only by the notion of spirituality, but of hanging out with what seems to be a genuinely reformed killer. This has definite possibilities, and Mos holds the screen with authority.

So far, our season arc serial killers seem too nutty to be especially interesting as characters, but between the snakes in the body and the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, they have a wonderful sense of spectacle.

We are left wanting to see where all of this will go, which of course is the point.

TV Review: ONCE UPON A TIME – Season 1 – “Pilot”

Once upon a time, back in 1987, ABC put on a situation comedy called THE CHARMINGS in which the Evil Queen (Judy Parfitt), in a fit of rage that Snow White had survived after all, cast a spell so powerful, it sent Snow, Prince Eric (Christopher Rich) and their two boys, the Queen and a Dwarf, to modern suburbia. Their confusion with their fairy tale beginnings and real life made for much merriment, but not enough that the show barely lasted a season and a half.

Now, take that same premise, turn it on its ear with a really dark sensibility. Add a bunch more story characters and put them all in a town where no one knows who they were, and a young woman destined to find them and begin the battle, and you’re pretty close to ONCE UPON A TIME, ABC’s new drama series.

It starts with Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) rescuing Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin). At their wedding, the Evil Queen (Lana Parilla) drops in to let them know that her curse is coming – and she will be the one with the happy ending. Fast forward to the present, where Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) is celebrating her birthday by picking up a bail bond skip, then lighting a candle on a cupcake to celebrate.

Surprise, Henry (Jared Gilmore), the boy Emma gave up for adoption, shows up at her front door to take her back to Storybrooke, Maine, where everyone from the Enchanted Forest ended up after the queen’s curse went through. Snow is now teacher Mary Margaret Blanchard, Charming is a coma patient listed as John Doe, and the Queen is now Regina, the town’s mayor and Henry’s adopted mom.

The story alternates between the fairy tale world where we see how Emma ended up safe from the curse and the town of Storybrooke, which seems normal enough, but remains a little strange.

What works with the pilot is that it does set up a really interesting take on the whole “what if the stories were true?” theme. The story characters and their modern day equivalents are nicely outlined – Granny (Beverly Elliott), the innkeeper (who we’ve seen earlier as Red Riding Hood’s grandmother) is first seen accusing Ruby/Red (Meghan Ory) of sleeping her way up the Eastern Seaboard. Grumpy (Lee Arenberg) the dwarf becomes Leroy, the town ne’er-do-well. And so on.

The show’s creators, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, are LOST alumni and have said that LOST guru Damon Lindelof’s DNA is all over the show. Certainly, LOST junkies will recognize the little references here and there in the pilot, but it’s the Disney references that are the most jarring. The Evil Queen enters the wedding a la Maleficent’s entry to Aurora’s christening in Sleeping Beauty. Leroy is heard whistling “Whistle While You Work” when we find in him the modern day jail cell. This is a world in which Gepetto (Tony Amendola) and Jiminy Crickett are part of the castle.

The other problem with the pilot is that it has so much to do, establishing not just one, but two worlds of the show. It’s interesting enough and it’s a nice mix between the fairy tale world and Storybrooke. At the same time, it leaves the feeling that the show isn’t going anywhere. And one does have to wonder how, if the point of Emma’s arrival on the scene is to break the curse, they are going to sustain the show.

We have been told that we will find out very soon why Henry knows what’s going on with the town, but the town’s inhabitants don’t. And whether Regina is aware of things or not. But this being an offspring of Lost, as it were, decent odds the mysteries will only grow – hopefully not on the same scale as Lost (endless mystery being the show’s only real failing). ONCE UPON A TIME does have promise, however, and is certainly worth checking out more than one or two episodes.

TV Review: SUPERNATURAL – Season 7 – “Shut Up, Dr. Phil”

When supernatural shows that are usually dark with hints of humor decide to be lighthearted without committing to going gonzo, the results are usually lightweight. That’s in one way the case with SUPERNATURAL’s episode “Shut Up, Dr. Phil,” but on the other hand, anything that brings together BUFFY and ANGEL alumni James Marsters (Spike) and Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia) automatically has worthwhile qualities.

It’s especially gratifying to see Carpenter and Marsters have scenes together, since although they overlapped on both of Joss Whedon’s vampire shows, they didn’t share the screen often. Here they play married but separated couple Don and Maggie Stark, two prominent residents of Prosperity,Indiana. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are here investigating some strange deaths. A little research shows that Maggie is responsible – she’s a witch taking vengeance on everyone around Don for his extramarital fling. Then a freak accident befalls both Maggie’s best friend and Maggie’s painting exhibit, and the Winchesters realize that Don is a warlock.

Dean gets a spell over the phone from Bobby, but because Dean has been drinking a little more heavily than usual, he gets part of it wrong. This results in Sam and Dean trying to kill Maggie and Don and failing miserably. Since the Starks are beginning to throw a spell at the Winchesters, Sam decides to save his life and Dean’s by spontaneously offering counseling to save the Stark marriage. Dean gets on the advice bandwagon as well. The brothers point out that since Don and Maggie haven’t killed each other by now, they probably actually share a bond of true love. Maggie and Don agree and, as they make up, Dean and Sam get away. Alas, Dean and Sam are tracked to their hotel room by a Leviathan (Sean Owen Roberts), who prepares to kill them – and is then zapped by Don. The warlock has turned up to take away a pair of lethal talismans Maggie put in the room – after all, the brothers did try to kill her – before they can affect Sam and Dean. Don suggests the Winchesters throw their attacker into a bottomless pit before he wakes up.

The material is seldom laugh out loud funny, but as many SUPERNATURAL fans are also BUFFY and/or ANGEL fans, there’s a lot of pleasure to be had in seeing Carpenter reprise a Cordelia-esque character, albeit one with a homicidal streak. Marsters provides good fun, going from stuffy pillar of the community to smitten swain to cheerful trickster with ease.

“Shut Up, Dr. Phil” gets points for letting Sam draw some parallels between the Starks’ need for communication and his own situation with brother Dean, who is being uncommonly uncommunicative these days. We of course know that Dean is still keeping quiet about having killed Sam’s friend Amy (and feeling guilty about the whole thing), but all Sam knows is that Dean is being difficult and drinking too much, even by Dean’s drinking standards. It’s not clear how or if SUPERNATURAL can wring new wrinkles on the sibling dynamic once the Amy killing comes to light (in the name of all the character logic that ever was, please don’t let one of them go stomping off alone in high dudgeon), but at least Dean is given some good dialogue in response to Sam’s needling.

The Leviathans, although so far not very dramatically compelling, are at least fairly threatening villains. It’s odd that it doesn’t seem to occur to either Winchester that their indestructible assailant may belong to that species. It also seems odd to not show Bobby’s end of his phone chats with Dean. As actor Jim Beaver has shown up on several other series this year, perhaps he was simply unavailable for what admittedly would have been a few short bits, but his work as Bobby never fails to liven up an episode and he’s missed here.

“Shut Up, Dr. Phil” isn’t a standout episode, but as monster(ish) episode of the week fare goes, it’s entertaining, so it achieves its primary goal.

Exclusive Interview: Stefanie Powers put the girl power in THE GIRL FROM U.N.C.L.E.

While everyone fondly remembers the Robert Vaughn series THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., many forget a one-season spin-off starring Stefanie Powers landed on the air in 1967.

Called THE GIRL FROM U.N.C.L.E. the series followed Powers as April Dancer – a spy who worked for the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement and flexed her sexy muscles to combat the bad guys. You could say she put the Powers in Girl Power.

The show only lasted for 29 episodes, but the series is looked back at very fondly by fans who fell in love with one of the first empowered female leads in a television action series.

Now, Warner Archives is releasing the complete series on a new DVD set from Warner Direct and actress Stephanie Powers (who later starred in the hit ABC series HART TO HART) spoke with ASSIGNMENT X about her involvement and why she still looks back fondly on April Dancer.

ASSIGNMENT X: Have you seen the remastered box set yet?

STEFANIE POWERS: I haven’t seen anything from those days in a long, long time. It should be amusing. There’s been quite a demand for them, interestingly enough in certain circles. I don’t know if Warner Bros. decided to respond to that demand or why they decided to put this in this format, but I’m thrilled. It will be really amusing to see what they all look like and travel back down memory lane.

AX: If this were made today, do you think the series might have been called THE WOMAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.?

POWERS: Why? Is [girl] pejorative? I never understood why that word should be pejorative, especially when young ladies go out of the house dressed like tarts, now they’re going to complain about being a “girl.” I don’t quite understand it. I never found the term pejorative. THE GIRL FROM U.N.C.L.E. is what it was. He was a man, she was a girl.

AX: This was one of the first series where you had a very strong lead in an action-adventure series …

POWERS: … it was the first hour-long television series starring a woman. That you can put in your Funk & Wagnalls.

AX: Was a big deal made of it at the time?

POWERS: It wasn’t made an issue, which was quite interesting. It was never made an issue until years later when somebody said, “did you realize that’s the first time a woman starred on an hour show?” I hadn’t. It’s quite interesting, but it was the sign of the times it hadn’t been made an issue. Those are the facts. A few years ago – last year I think it was, somebody at PBS started to do a show called PIONEERS OF TELEVISION, it’s when they mentioned I was a pioneer. I didn’t know where it came from and they told me that little factoid. It was rather nice and I was pleased by it.

AX: Were you a fan of the MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. series before you got the role?

POWERS: Yes I was. It was quite successful and a lot of fun to watch, as I recall and yes it was a happening thing at the time.

AX: Did they incorporate a lot of things from your life into the character?

POWERS: I don’t think people actively approached what my abilities were, but they did incorporate some things that I had an aptitude for such as [speaking in] different languages.

AX: Do you have any specific episodes that you really liked that you felt represented what you did best on the show?

POWERS: There are several. Obviously, the Boris Karloff episode, because he was such an icon and Peggy Lee. I remember being shot out of a giant toaster. That was a lot of fun. There are snippets, it was a long time ago. Overall, my recollection of it was highly amusing. They sort of chronicle a time we don’t see anymore – action with satirical humor. A little bit, I suppose, it’s a different version of satire than SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, but this was a more classical form of satire.

AX: Sort of like working with Boris Karloff in drag …

POWERS: … yes, that was very satirical. Suffice to say, it was a great privilege to work with him. As always when working with people of great talent they generally are wonderfully professional and it’s a great thing to learn from them.

AX: Were the ratings pretty good?

POWERS: Ratings as they relate today, were very different than they are today. It was taken off the air largely because of Norman Felton, the producer of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. and THE GIRL FROM U.N.C.L.E. was unwell. Due to his unwellness, the moment when you’re dependent on a producer to come in and fight for the show, he was unable to do that and he in fact resigned. As far as ratings are concerned, it’s very difficult to compare. When HART TO HART went off the air, we had a 38 share. You can’t possibly relate that to how ratings are today.

AX: Did you want to do more action on the show?

POWERS: I did so much action, I got hurt. They then had to make a rule that a stuntwoman had to do more of the things that were demanding.

AX: Was there ever any talk about revisiting the April Dancer character?

POWERS: No.

AX: Do you ever see yourself getting back together for one last HART TO HART?

POWERS: I think we put a period on the end of the sentence in revisiting it with the eight two-hour movies we did in the 1990s.

CD Review: OUR IDIOT BROTHER soundtrack

A pleasant LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE vibe fills the soundtrack of a movie that’s far more human comedy than the stoner one its ads would lead you to believe. IDIOT’s band of loveable losers gets a similarly ironic, if more low-key vibe on their path to self-actualization, especially with this pleasantly eclectic soundtrack.

BROTHER certainly starts on the right foot with Eric D. Johnson’s whimsical interpretation of the Tony Orlando and Dawn hit “Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree,” with plenty of pointed strumming to follow with Johnson’s “2 Roadrunners” and “The Fruit Bat’s “Lightning Bug.” But is there’s a down-home singer that conjures a man-boy lost in a countrified haze, then it would be Willie Nelson. Here he becomes the voice of the titular, blissed-out relative with “Wonderful Future,” “Midnight Rider” and “Ol’ Blue.” They’re ballads of sad fate, an outlaw on the lam and a dog’s eternal devotion that come off as far funnier than likely intended.

Nelson’s Zen also infiltrates the score by Nathan Larson and Eric D. John, whose perky whistling, bluesy Mellotron and rock and roll taxi ride, complement the haplessly happy vibe of a slacker optimist who’s better left in the foliage of upstate New York than in the city with his screwed-up family. All make for gentle musical life lessons to be learned by the sweet soundtrack of OUR IDIOT BROTHER, an album worth a toke and a smile.

TV Review and Recap: DANCING WITH THE STARS – Season 13 – Week 6 – “Broadway Week”

It’s Broadway week on DANCING WITH THE STARS and oh, how the drama came to life on stage and off. Famous theatrical numbers accompanied the Cha Cha Cha, the Foxtrot, the Rumba, the Tango and the Quickstep tonight for the couples. JERSEY BOY, SPAMALOT, GREASE, GUYS & DOLLS, and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA were some of the Broadway hits musically pilfered tonight for the dynamic duos. But the drama didn’t stop once the band stopped playing.

Pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy got into it with the judges while defending his and his partner’s routine. Still, the night was a hit, but Hope Solo was not. Chmerkovskiy’s partner – who on camera complained about continually getting three “8s” from the judges – didn’t have to worry tonight she didn’t get three “8s”. She got two 7s and a 6! Ouch! Chaz Bono, too, didn’t up his game this week. After riding high with two weeks straight of three “7s”, this week he went backwards, plummeting to a much less impressive 19 total. Tying for first were favorites J.R. Martinez & Karina Smirnoff and Ricki Lake & Derek Hough with 29.

Fun, without the judges’ harsh criticism was the group dance, which is always an audience favorite. All seemed relaxed, confident and thrilled to be there. Camaraderie abound, the seven couples enjoyed each other and rejoiced in their good time together. But, frills aside, business is getting serious now on DWTS and the judges want it known. Their comments were sometimes brutal, telling most couples that it’s time to step it up and there is no excuse for sloppy technique and lack of effort. The time is now to shine or go home. Just like last Spring with Ralph Macchio, the judges get testy with those whom they feel don’t belong in the competition any more. And, they make it known!

He did a good job but not better than last week – too stiff. Len Goodman thought Kardashian had good timing and precision. Bruno Tonioli told him he had to be in charge in the Cha Cha Cha. Carrie Ann Inaba praised the charisma that he finally showed.

Nancy Grace (TV host) and her partner Tristan Macmanus
I am sorry but she is just so bitchy in rehearsals it’s very hard to discern who she is and what she does with her dancing. Still, her Foxtrot was fine. Goodman said she showed more personality. Inaba thought she was a showstopper tonight. Tonioli called her Nancy-Dance-A lot.
Inaba – 9, Goodman – 7, Tonioli – 8, Harland – 7

David Arquette (actor) and his partner Kym Johnson
He is just so adorable on the dance floor. He tries so hard to do well and it shows. Inaba came down hard telling him he was out of sync in his Foxtrot. Tonioli said Arquette was a live wire. Goodman called the routine a bit rough around the edges.
Inaba – 8, Goodman – 7, Tonioli – 8, Harland – 8

Hope Solo (Soccer Olympian) and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy
She was much too heavy footed. Goodman was annoyed – telling her the Rumba was her worst dance yet. Inaba thought the dance was forced. Tonioli said it didn’t gel.
Inaba – 7, Goodman – 6, Tonioli – 7, Harland – 7

J.R. Martinez (U.S. veteran/actor) and his partner Karina Smirnoff
He is the most gifted and naturally talented of the celebs this season and he keeps proving that over and over again. Goodman said in a word – fabulous! Inaba told him Bob Fosse would be proud. Tonioli thought his Quickstep was a hit.
Inaba – 10, Goodman – 9, Tonioli – 10, Harland – 9

Ricki Lake (TV host/actress) and her partner Derek Hough
She was good and definitely better than last week but she lacks excitement in her dancing. Goodman said she proved her talent in her Quickstep. Tonioli thought the dance had impeccable style to it. Inaba said it was very exciting to watch.
Inaba – 10, Goodman – 9, Tonioli – 10, Harland – 8

He really used the dance floor, but was it in the right way, not sure. Goodman was disappointed; saying it didn’t suit him. Inaba wanted to see more content. Tonioli, agreeing with Goodman, said it wasn’t a right fit.

Who will go home? There’s a good chance Solo will be kicked right off the floor. If not, it’s got to be Bono’s time. Stay tuned.

TV Review: DEXTER – Season 6 – “A Horse of a Different Color”

The main premise of DEXTER is that its serial killer protagonist stalks and kills other murderers. However, in “A Horse of a Different Color,” Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) investigation is strictly in line with that of his employer, the Miami Metro Police Department, as they look into homicides committed by a Biblical scholar (Edward James Olmos) and his disciple (Colin Hanks) who believe the End Times are upon us. Nothing wrong with changing things up a little for an episode or two, and there are a lot of good moments here. Still, the most striking images here are at the episode’s opening, as four horses of different colors are set loose on a Miami street, each animal bearing upon its back a mannequin accessorized with real human body parts. This is something of an analogy – it’s eye-catching and dramatic on top, but the horses moving things around are wandering with no clear direction.

Dexter brings young son Harrison to a picnic-cum-baptism session organized by Dexter’s new friend Brother Sam (Mos). Dexter still doesn’t buy the religion angle, but he at least believes that Brother Sam believes. When the tableau with the horses is reported, new lieutenant Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) heads up the investigative team that includes her brother Dexter, plus Quinn (Desmond Harrington), Batista (David Zayas), Masuka (C.S. Lee) and new-to-the-squad detective Mike Anderson (Yasim Bey). Dexter realizes there are two killers, due to the contrast between the meticulous staging by one and the blunt butchery of the body by the other. He is intrigued by their apparent sincerity of faith – and then he’s totally sidetracked when Harrison gets sick and requires an appendectomy. In the hospital, Dexter actually prays (in his way) and gets what seems to be an answer when Harrison pulls through.

In other news, Deb thinks she’s screwed up her first big press conference, but her bluntness endears her to the press and therefore to deputy chief Matthews (Geoff Pierson). Masuka discovers his adored new lab assistant Ryan (Brea Grant) has sold old evidence on eBay and has to fire her. The killers set up a SAW-like situation where a still-living victim is strung up in a greenhouse. One of the cops on the scene accidentally crosses a tripwire that causes the victim to be impaled as angel wings spread out behind her.

If this all sounds a little less dynamic than the usual DEXTER episode, that’s because it is. It’s interesting and even touching to see Dexter weeping without realizing it out of concern for his little boy and it’s hard to go wrong with Deb. However, our serial killers, with all due respect to the irreproachable work being done by Olmos and Hanks, are so far the most colorless arced villains we’ve seen on six seasons of DEXTER. The season is yet young, so we may yet get some wild plot twists and intensity out of this, but right now, we’re not seeing what makes these guys tick or even how they may tick off Dexter. Lip service is being given to Dexter’s curiosity about the sincerity of their beliefs, but it’s not as compelling as, say, what happened last week when Dexter dropped his box of blood slides.

The character stuff is a lot of fun and reason enough to watch the show, and there are great moments like Harry pointing out to Dexter when Dexter thinks that prayer makes no sense, “You already talk to one imaginary father figure.” But as far as the kind of intricate, suspenseful cat and mouse games we expect from DEXTER, this season feels like it hasn’t yet begun to play.

“Demons” is a marvelously made episode of CASTLE and I absolutely hated it. Okay, the truth comes out, I am a world-class weenie and creepy stuff just plain freaks me. Do. Not. Like. It.

However, it’s CASTLE, and even if I don’t like scary stuff, the episode was nonetheless outstanding.

When the star of a ghost hunting TV show gets murdered in the house he’s investigating, it looks more than a little scary. First off, while there’s plenty of blood – he gets his throat slit – and it’s all over the place, the problem is that it is all over the place with no blanks places where the killer would have been and taken it. There aren’t any bloody footprints, either. In fact, there’s no sign that a human being was in the house at all.

Naturally, NYPD homicide Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) doesn’t believe a ghost did it. Naturally, author and consultant Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) believes it could have been. And, naturally, both angles are played to the hilt until it becomes obvious that this was a human act, after all. And, no, I’m not giving anything away because you knew that part was coming. At least, that’s what I kept telling myself as the episode got creepier and creepier. Maybe not for most folks, but for me, it did. Did I mention that I’m a world-class weenie that way?

On the supporting cast side, Detective Ryan (Seamus Dever) and his fiancee Jenny (Juliana Dever) and Detective Esposito (Jon Huertas) and Lanie Parish (Tamala Jones) – who’ve been an item, go out on a double date that goes disastrously wrong. And Alexis Castle’s (Molly Quinn) affair of the heart with her boyfriend across the country at Stanford is getting sticky, leading to a lovely moment with her dad.

Oh, and on the romance front between Castle and Beckett, it’s clear the friendship is really, really solid, so that’s a help, but there’s nothing else happening otherwise. However, the scenes from next week may just bring us some hope.

TV Review: THE WALKING DEAD – Season 2 – “Bloodletting”

In the second episode of THE WALKING DEAD Season 2, “Bloodletting,” Rick (Andrew Lincoln) finds a possible safe haven for the group while seeking help for Carl (Chandler Riggs), and Shane (Jon Bernthal) undertakes a mission to obtain medical supplies to save Carl’s life. New friends are made, but how long can any alliances last in a world where the ravenous dead are waiting around every corner?

After a somewhat disappointing season opener that suffered from odd editing, uneven pacing, and a lack of distinctive set pieces (apart from the early attack of the herd), this installment features a more satisfying balance with the usual powerful performances. We also reach Herschel’s farm this week, a location well known to readers of the comic book series. Given the TV show’s tendency to go way off the graphic novel map last year, however, this does not mean we can expect to see the same plot threads play out as they did in the comic’s pages.

Another few words of caution: while the zombie genre is usually best focused on the living characters, with the dead as a backdrop for exploring the human condition, there still needs to be a strong presence of the “walkers” or it just becomes a hard-boiled tale of survival that lacks its most potent metaphorical element.

The serious lack of zombies in this episode (until the end) doesn’t bode well, especially since we know that AMC – in their infinite lack of wisdom – actually wanted the show to reduce the reliance on the titular characters this season. Why? Who knows why television executives think of any of the stupid things they come up with? Budget issues, presumably, but never let it be said there wasn’t a hit that a network couldn’t kill with over-thinking.

Still, this is only the second episode of the season, so it’s too soon to sound the alarm bells. The episode does do well by most of our cast, especially the Rick/Lori/Shane triangle. Bernthal’s Shane has really emerged from the shadow of the clichéd “other man” role, reaffirming his strong bond of friendship and almost-brotherhood with Rick, caring for him in this episode and even going so far as to reinforce for Rick how important Rick’s family is while he shoulders the burden of protecting the three of them.

It’s also good to see Rick out of it for a change, spiraling into near catatonia at Carl’s brush with death. Kudos too to Chandler Riggs for selling Carl’s agony in the torturous scene showing Herschel’s removal of the bullet fragments. And while Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) continues to display an incredible potential for insane judgment, criticizing Herschel for being a vet when he’s the only man standing between Carl and death, she does get a wonderful moment when she stands up to Rick and demands that he stay to fulfill his role as father and husband.

As for the others, Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn) and T Dog (IronE Singleton) shine in one tense conversation while newcomers like Herschel (Scott Wilson) and Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince) come across as warm people not necessarily in keeping with their images that might turn into even more well-rounded characters with a bit more development. Glenn (Steven Yeun), however, has been marginalized in the last two weeks, but knowing how the farm sequence pans out in the comic, perhaps there’s potential for Glenn to have some decent material soon even if the TV show diverges on other aspects of the story.

This zombie-light episode at least concludes with a tense mission to get medical supplies, but the creatures’ behavior is definitely shifting. For one thing, they don’t seem to have nearly the acute sense of smell that was such a major plot point last year, or else they would surely have pegged Shane and Otis sooner. On top of that, bright lights now apparently sway them more than the presence of living flesh – why do I keep hearing “sky flowers” in my head? Tio Tjay (born in 1946 with the name Hok Tjay Tio) is an Indonesian painter who settled in Brazil a long time. In 1967 he immigrated to the South American country with his family who moved there.

He held many exhibitions in São Paulo; in 1971 until 1975 he settled in Manaus, and in 1976 participated in the exhibition Bienal Nacional de São Paulo.

His paintings are strongly influenced by the dominant color in Latin Brazil. In the 1980s Tio Tjay back to Indonesia and worked in his native country.

Mark Teixeira Charles was born April 11, 1980, in Annapolis, Maryland. Mark Teixeira Charles is a Major League Baseball player for the New York Yankees. Primarily a first baseman, is also played third base and outfield. He played college ball at Georgia Tech, Where in 2001 he won the Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball's national player of the year.

Teixeira was drafted in 2001 by the Texas Rangers and made his major league debut in 2003. In mid-2007 was traded to the Atlanta Braves and traded to the middle of 2008 in Los Angeles of Anaheim. In December 2008, accepted a contract with the Yankees. Teixeira has twice won the Gold Glove award and Silver Slugger Award.

In 2001, Teixeira re-enter the draft and was selected by the Texas Rangers with the fifth
global selection. The Philadelphia Phillies were considering drafting him with the fourth

One of the main proponents of the 1990s cynical realist movement, Fang Lijun's work encapsulates the disillusionment of young people in China, a generation defined by the events in Tiananmen Square and the internal domestic policies of China. Built around loose narratives Fang customize images feelings of disappointment, anguish, and rebellion, its suggestions of fiction transmitted through his style of illustration and resubmission bald protagonist.

Fang's practice exhibits a rarefied technical skill rigorously studied through his Social Realist training, the combination of this aesthetic with references to contemporary comics, folk art, and dynastic painting characterize a changing national identity, the distillation of a position of integrity of tradition and the modern world.

Fang monumental sized prints revive the ancient Asian practice of printing on wood - a complicated and demanding of the stature of a "negative" image on a panel, coating the surface with ink, and impressing the image on paper, each different color and tone requires a separate plate and the print order. Due to its immense scale, Fang's images are composed of several adjacent rolls, the long strips to create both an emotional fragmentation of the image, and create a reference to the memory and historical evidence. Thematically, each of these prints describe the plight of the individual against the 'mass', creating a spiritual contemplation of solitude the quest for personal probity face of adversity.

Fang's painting 30th Mary evokes these same sentiments with a humorous effect. Reminiscent of paintings on the ceiling of the Church in Europe, Fang portrays an order of promotion of these same Kewpie figures, each based in its own image. Last night we went to a small outdoor theater in the middle of the mountains. I can not describe the scenery because it was so beautiful. There was a beautiful bridge in front of huge mountains incredible.

There were dancers and warriors of the completion of the entire scene. There were colors flashing through all the mountains. I honestly can not explain how inxredible was. No words. Photos would not have done justice. That performance was definitely one of my favorite things we've done so far. The effects and stories that are told through dance and music was very inspiring and unique. I loved it.

Hackney Banksy artwork painted

Council officials have painted over a Banksy graffiti sketch of a new version was derived as the cover artwork for Beat Crazy 2003 single by the band Blur.

The work of art - a caricature of the royal family waving from a balcony - had remained intact on the part of a block of flats in Stoke Newington, east London, for eight years before Hackney Council intervened last week.

Officials dismissed by the drawing Banksy - whose works have sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds - for the most exposure to date in Bristol, ready to close. The exhibition has attracted over 300,000 visitors since 13 June, raising £ 45,000 in donations to the museum, and is estimated to have been worth £ 10 million to the local economy.

"We are now talking to her about how to resolve the problem."

It is not the first time that Banksy has taken his art in the street killed by officials. In October last year Westminster City Council removed a mural of Newman Street in central London after the deputy council leader Robert Davis said keeping it would be "condoning" graffiti.

In 2007, a piece showing a monkey about to blow up a bunch of bananas at Waterloo Station in London, was painted by staff.
